Top 5 LinkedIn Tips for Surgeons

Enhancing a surgeon’s professional presence has become increasingly important in today’s market, whether you work solely within the NHS, are considering private practice or already have an established private practice. We all have a professional reputation based on how people perceive us, and your LinkedIn profile is one place where that experience and expertise can be represented online.

As originally promised at the Royal College of Surgeons’ Surgeons In and Out of Theatre Conference, below are our top five LinkedIn tips for surgeons.

Top 5 LinkedIn Tips for Surgeons

Tip 1 – Make Your LinkedIn Profile Easy to Find

Your LinkedIn profile can help patients, peers and other professionals understand who you are and what you do. One simple step is to personalise your LinkedIn URL rather than leaving the automatically generated combination of your name and numbers.

A clear profile URL using your name also looks more professional when it is included on websites, biographies and other professional material.

Tip 2 – Use Your Profile Imagery

Your profile photograph and background image provide an immediate visual introduction to you. Use professional imagery that is appropriate for your role and reflects how you want to be represented.

Your background image can also provide additional context about your specialist area, professional work or practice without overwhelming the rest of your profile.

Tip 3 – Make Your Expertise Immediately Clear

People should be able to understand your area of expertise quickly. Your LinkedIn profile should clearly state your professional role and specialist area.

For example, rather than simply using “Consultant”, you could provide the relevant context, such as Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, where appropriate.

This is particularly important if you are developing a private practice or want to become better known within a particular specialist area.

Tip 4 – Use Your Headline to Explain What You Do

The area beneath your name gives you another opportunity to explain your expertise. Think about what a prospective patient, colleague or professional connection needs to understand about you.

Your headline should accurately represent your current role, experience and relevant specialist expertise rather than simply repeating your job title.

Tip 5 – Use Recommendations to Support Your Experience

Recommendations from people who have worked with you can provide additional evidence of your professional experience. Where appropriate, consider asking colleagues, peers or other professional contacts to provide a genuine LinkedIn recommendation based on their experience of working with you.

These recommendations should complement the qualifications, experience and other evidence already presented across your professional profile.

Building Your Professional Presence as a Surgeon

In an increasingly competitive healthcare sector, it can be difficult for surgeons to dedicate time to their online presence alongside demanding clinical schedules. However, prospective patients and professional contacts increasingly research people online before making decisions.

LinkedIn is only one part of that presence. Your website, search visibility, professional credentials, reputation and the information available about your expertise all contribute to how you are found and understood online.

New Media Ghost has worked with surgeons and the healthcare sector for many years, including delivering guidance at the Royal College of Surgeons’ Surgeons In and Out of Theatre Conference. That experience continues to inform the work we do with private practice professionals today.
